Self-esteem is how you feel about yourself overall. It is the positive feeling you have for yourself regardless of your appearance, status and success. If you feel like you need to boost your belief in your self, there are few self esteem building activities that can help you a lot.
It is difficult to build self-esteem than self-confidence. Sometimes people hide their low self-esteem behind their accolades and successes. But such people start feeling miserable when they could not perform according to their standards.
Low self-esteem can take happiness out of your life and can make you miserable. While too high self-esteem can cause narcissism, low self esteem makes it difficult to live a fulfilled and happy life. So a respectable love for your mind, body and soul is required to have a healthy self-esteem.
1. Start praising yourself
Praising yourself for your achievements, capabilities or whatever you have is the first important step in building your self-esteem and confidence. I think you will agree with me on this one that thoughts have a profound effect on our emotions and actions.
When you have a thought in your mind, your brain creates a neural connection in your brain and each time the connection is strengthened with that thought. Whatever you go on thinking about yourself, it becomes your belief. When you praise yourself, those thoughts become beliefs and change your mind physically.
How to praise yourself
- I am capable of solving the problems I face
- I always do my best to complete the task given to me
- I try to do my best
- I may be imperfect but I always work towards getting better
- Each day bring new confidence in me
There are many ways to praise yourself. It is necessary to pat yourself on your accomplishments and reward yourself on your achievements. It will boost your self-esteem.
2. Create a self-care routine
I know all of us always have a million things to do. There is no time left for self-care. But it is an important activity to build self-esteem. Taking time to practice self-care helps in creating a sense of worthiness.
Self Care: Self-care is looking after yourself mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally. These are all parts of life and neglecting any one of them causes a void within.
How can you practice self-care
- Wake up with a happy and fresh mind and say thanks for another beautiful day in the life
- Keep 5 minutes for deep breathing
- Start a journal
- exercise for 10 minutes daily
- Have a good laugh
- Think some soothing thoughts
There are many self-care ideas but I am always more inclined towards taking care of your inner soul. High self-esteem prompts you to practice self care and practising self-care build your self-esteem.
3. Start the positive self-talk
Having a positive conversation with your self is important to build your self-esteem. Have you ever paid attention to how your conversation is with yourself? I have an example, one day one of my friends called me and asked me what I was doing. I said I was fighting with my partner inside my thoughts. Her answer was, I was doing the same and we had a good laugh over it.
After that day, I started to pay attention, how self-sabotaging is my self talk. I do the same now but I am more vigilant about my self-talk. If I catch myself talking some negative stuff to myself, I try to distract my thoughts. Replacing a negative thought with something better is the key.
4. Pamper yourself
Keep yourself before others. It is important to take care of your needs before others. There is nothing wrong in doing so as you will be better equipped to love and help others when you have high self-esteem. Your friends and loved ones pamper you on your birthday and imagine that beautiful feeling when someone makes you special.
Why not do it yourself. Because friends and family will pamper you on your special day but you have the capacity to make your every day special.
How to pamper yourself
- Take a bubble bath
- Go to spa
- Go to the saloon and get manicure and pedicure
- Watch a movie at the theatre
- Sit outside and watch the sunset
5. Be generous to others
It is great to keep yourself before others but being generous is another thing. It means helping those desperately in need and volunteering whenever possible. It will give you a sense of happiness.
6. Practice mindful meditation
Practising mindful meditation helps you connect to your self. While doing meditation, you have to be in present and at the same time concentrate on one thing mainly your breath. When you feel yourself in the present, you are aware of your surroundings, your body and thoughts. This way, you become more vigilant of your negative thoughts.
Whenever a negative thought comes into your life, you can change it to a positive
7. Listen to your body and mind
It is important to listen to your body and inner thoughts. If you feel uncomfortable in your body weight, start exercising. Lose some weight and give your body the required boost. If you are desperate to meet your friend or family but could not get to them due to day to day obligations, squeeze some time to meet your loved one.
If you were waiting for a movie release of your favourite ctor, go and watch it. These activities will make you important in our own eyes. Doing something for your self boost your self-esteem.
8. Acknowledge your success
Most of the time, your thoughts are concentrated on what you don’t have. Same goes with your accomplishments and successes. When you become successful in one project, you forget that and start the next one. And in doing so, you forget on the way that you have achieved a lot.
Always pat on your back for the important milestones on your path. Try to write down what you achieved last year or in the last 5 years. I am sure you will be able to find something worthwhile to bask in the glory of your achievements. Acknowledge that and congratulate yourself.
9. Dress nicely and the way you want
Dressing nicely always have a positive impact on your body image as well as self-esteem. Dress for your self, the way you feel comfortable and happy. Grab a good dress from your wardrobe , iron it( if required) and wear it confidently. Feel the difference how you feel. I bet you will feel better and more confident after dressing nicely.
The way you look outside to have a positive impact on your mind and body. You don’t need to spend a hefty amount on buying dresses just a neat ironed dress would do wonders in boosting your self-esteem.
10. Learn to say no
Don’t be a people pleaser and learn to say no when you feel like. Saying no in a respectful manner make others believe that you have some set boundaries. And that your boundaries must be respected.
11. Accept your mistakes open-heartedly
As with your acknowledgement of success, accepting your mistakes is as important. Accept the responsibility of the mistake you made and learn from them. Don’t make the same mistakes again and again and don’t feel bad about mistakes.
12. Have a positive Attitude
A positive attitude is related to higher self-esteem. I think you will agree with me on this one that dwelling in the past and thinking too much over the future bring your self-esteem down. This can be altered only by thinking that you can neither change your past nor make your future by thinking negatively about it.
The only solution is to bring your mind in present. Whatever you think today and whatever you do today will shape your future as well as make your past better. This is possible through having a positive attitude today.
13. Commit to your decisions
Committing to your decisions make you more confident and the lack of commitment causes frustration and stress. If this continues, it lowers your belief in yourself. Instead, if you have made a decision, don’t let self-doubt stop you from taking action.
To avoid this, commit to your decisions and finish whatever you have started. You will start feeling better about yourself in an authentic way.
14. Practice laughing
Laughing is therapeutic and contagious. It is not only your face that shows happiness, but it is also something intrinsic. If someone jokes on you and hurt you intentionally or unintentionally, don’t take it too seriously, rather laugh on it. It will save you from thinking too much of that instant.
This will help you build your self esteem in the long run.
15. Read Self Help books
Words can give you a great deal of motivation and they stuck in your mind. I am very much prone to anxiety and feeling low about myself. It is a daily grind for me but reading self-help books gives you the required motivation to forget self-sabotaging thoughts and build self-confidence.
Few of my favourite books are The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari by Robin Sharma
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is my all-time favourite books to get that required boost whenever I need.
The powerful words written in these books transform how you think about yourself.
16. Find a hobby
This one is real gold to boost your mood, self esteem and confidence. If you love to do something, do it daily and make a habit to work on your hobby. You know why hobbies are so great because no one dictates you what you have to do and what you want to do with your time.
You are totally in charge of your time and your creation. Just start a hobby and pursue it.
17. Be grateful for whatever you have
Some people feel so happy about what they have. Building high self-esteem involves feeling grateful for whatever you have. It takes your attention from scarcity towards abundance.
How can you feel grateful
- I am happy that I am healthy …..
- I am grateful for …
- Thank you for …
18. Use positive body Language
The way you stand and the way you portray yourself also impact the way you think. Having a positive attitude and positive body language is great for building and maintaining self-esteem.
19. Listen to your inner voice
There is a feeble voice inside you which is neglected most of the time. That voice is your own voice, your intuition which has the capacity to make you believe in yourself.
20. Love yourself
Love yourself in a respectable way. This kind of love is nothing like a narcissistic person love himself, rather it is pure and respectable love a person can have for him/herself.
