We are made up of habits, some are good and some are not so good. Good habits make you a great person while toxic habits take a toll on your life.
If you have good habits, anybody can say by looking at you that you have good habits but if you have bad habits, it is sometimes so difficult to recognise. They are hidden from us as well as from others.
Moreover, toxic habits take all the happiness out of your life.
Here are the toxic habits which you should quit immediately
1. Being too negative
We can have a positive or negative perceptive of a situation. It is okay if you feel negative about something occasionally, but if it becomes a kind of ritual, hold yourself back and introspect your habits.
This may lead to total negativity in life about everything you do. Negativity can come in many ways, negative people, thinking and your own negative ideas.
Try to limit interactions with negative people. Replace negative thoughts with positive ones. ( I know it is difficult but remember, a thought is a thought). You have total control over the flow of your thoughts.
2. Comparing yourself to others
As we know, we all have been given a set of skills which we can use to live a successful life. Everbody’s life is different. Also, the meaning of success is different for all of us. Never ever compare your life with others.
In today’s social media-heavy age, it is difficult not to fall for what others want to show us. This may not be the reality of their life. We get to know what they want us to see. But we start comparing our lives with their lives.
Everbody’s time is different. You get gifts of life at different stages of life. Instead of wasting your energy on the comparison, divert it towards the actions and tasks required to improve your own life.
To combat these feelings, while you log off your day, write down 3 things you accomplished today and three things you are thankful for having in life. This will help you raise awareness of your own blessings.
3. Waiting for the perfect time
If you are someone who always waits for the perfect time to come, change it. It happens to us many times that we are so afraid to take the first step that we always procrastinate by thinking that “I will do so and so when I will have …..!
To combat this, take action. as the Nike slogan is “Just do it”. Start taking action now. Perfection comes from action, not from daydreaming about being perfect. Remember, practice makes a man perfect.
Self-doubt is detrimental to your personal as well as professional life. If you think that you are your harsh critic, pause and reflect on your thoughts. There are some times when you may feel low due to some reasons but if this is the case every time, you need to find ways to combat this habit.
Self-doubt sets in, you lose confidence and a change occurs in your body language too. It may cause you to lose some better opportunities professionally too.
To change this, channelise your thoughts towards something better and start some activity which may help you forget those negative thoughts. If you are in self-doubt about a particular task, write down how you may exude confidence.
5. Not loving yourself is truly a toxic habit
Don’t sacrifice yourself too much, because if you sacrifice too much there’s nothing else you can give and nobody will care for you. Karl alagerfeld
Always keeping others before you, is detrimental to your overall life quality. Remember, it is a healthy feeling to love others and to care for others, but before that, self-love is important.
So first of all, love yourself. Start taking care f yourself, not only physically but emotionally too. Meditate for 10 minutes and laugh heartily.
6. Not sleeping well
It is said that you need sleep of 7-8 hours to feel energised and happy. If you cannot sleep for this amount, you feel sluggish and less effective at work.
Try to sleep for 7-8 hours. People who sleep for less than this complain of decreased productivity. Also, sleeping early will let you have quality sleep. If you are a night owl, try to sleep a few minutes from yesterday and gradually build this habit of sleeping early. Sleeping early will help you wake up early and fully energised.
Most of the time, your circadian rhythm (sleep cycle of the body) helps you sleep and wake up at the same time. Circadian Rhythms are the physical, mental and behavioural changes that follow a daily pattern. Sleeping at night and being awake during the day is the example of the light-related circadian rhythm.
7. Always living in the past is a toxic habit
I am so much guilty of this that I don’t have any memories from my recent years. I just miss and miss my college days that nothing seems to be interesting.
Many of us have this habit. I have to intentionally tell myself that my past will never change. But I can shape my future by being mindful of my present.
To eliminate this, you have to make concrete goals and start taking actions to accomplish those goals. These goals should be enough to motivate you to focus on future instead of past.
8. Procrastinating on important things
Procrastination is such a habit that we are all guilty of. At one point or other, we all procrastinate. But when it becomes a habit, it makes it impossible to accomplish anything.
If you want to eliminate this habit, go and take action. Write down the things you are procrastinating on. The project you have a deadline for but you are avoiding to work on it. Just start working on it. Are you avoiding a calling a client? Pick up your phone and make a call.
To eliminate this toxic habit, take action. Remember the frog theory. Accomplish the most dreaded task first and then start tacking each task one by one. Also, set time limits and block time for tasks.
9. Checking social media every few minutes
Do you feel the urge to check social media every few minutes? And the first thing you do in the morning is to check your social media? If this is the case, stop and introspect your habit.
Instead of this, start your day with gratitude. Meditate even if for 5 minutes. Read a book before sleeping. Shut down your screens at least an hour before sleeping. Keep your phone at an unreachable place.
10. Living in your comfort zone
You never change your life until you step out of your comfort zone; Change begins at the end of your comfort zone. Roy T. Bennett
Always staying in your comfort zone hampers your growth. To grow in your life, you have to come out of your comfort zone. Whether it is changing your job, career, running an extra mile or learning a skill, you have to be a little uncomfortable.
To come out of this habit, make a strict routine and add those things to your routine which you dread doing. Stay with the routine. If you don’t like to talk to strangers, make a commitment to talk to one stranger today and do it.
11. Let go of grudges
If you have a habit of keeping grudged and never forgive, this is the time to stop that. If you are stubborn and it is difficult to let go of a grudge, think that the anger and negativity hurts you more than anyone else.
Try to get out of that for your own sake. Keeping grudges can affect the positivity in your life.
Write down the things from the past which disturb you. Start tackling one by one. If somebody let you down by saying some bad things, forgive hin/her. Those words can only affect you if you want. You are more than that those stupid words. You are forgiving that person for you.
12. Not eating well
Many of us are guilty os not eating healthy always. When we are busy, we just gulp down whatever we get. If you are also into this habit, it needs to be taken care of.
To combat this, chose to eat intentionally. every time you find yourself buying junk food, replace it with something healthy. It will reward you with boatloads of energy and healthy life.
If you think that you have some of these toxic habits, start with the one which you think can be eliminated easily. I know habits are really difficult to break. Start with one and replace it with a healthier option.
When you have eliminated one habit, you will be inspired to take on another one.
