Have you ever thought about how you talk to yourself? And how much do you talk to yourself? Do this exercise today and pay attention to your conversation with your own self. If you feel your talk is mostly negative, start these positive self-talk exercises and see the difference.
Positive self-talk exercises for you to try
We have a conscious as well as the subconscious mind. Our self-talk is influenced by our subconscious mind as a result of our beliefs, thoughts and ideas we have in our minds. To live a fulfilled life, it is important to have healthy self-talk. Here are a few exercises which can help you change your inner dialogue to become an optimist.
1. Check your feelings
The first step is to recognise the feelings. If you feel miserable most of the time, it is highly that you have a pessimistic attitude. Being a pessimist makes your self talk negative and deplete your energy required to do great things.
Pay attention to what you say to yourself. Is it something like
- My life is messed up always
- I am good at nothing
- I cannot do this or that or
- You always fight with someone in your thoughts( this happens a lot with me also)
- You always remember anything from past for which you feel embarrassed and these feelings never go away
These are just a few examples and I myself do most of these things especially the last one.
To improve the inner dialogue, learn to differentiate the feelings arising from this type of self-talk. If you feel miserable after the self-talk, shift it by saying something good and feel happy about it.
2. Talk to positive people
If you identify that most of your talk is negative, you can talk to somebody with a positive mindset. People who are optimistic are better at motivating others.
Negative people are energy suckers whereas optimistic people generate positive vibrations which charge you with energy. Surround yourself with those people who inspire you to feel happy. Their positivity will help you find out a positive space for yourself.
3. Create a positive personal Mantra
This one is difficult to create and practice when you are already under the effect of negativity. Ask for help to somebody who has a positive attitude. Whenever you remember, just say these while inhaling and feel the joy while exhaling. Or you can make your own mantras like these one,
- Joy is right here and I chose to be happy
- I am blessed with all the necessary things required for success
- My happiness is my own as I am the happiest being
- Life is easy and I can feel the simplicity of life
You can create one mantra and work on it for a few days. Just repeating the mantras will not do anything, first, you have to recognise your negative thoughts or sadness. To heal your inner self, it is necessary to feel the inner sadness and then work on yourself.
4. Engage in physical exercise
Engaging in physical exercise improves the positive body image, mental state and health. Brain chemicals known as endorphins are produced in the brain. These endorphins interact with the receptors in the brain which reduce the perception of pain.
Endorphins also trigger a positive feeling in the body similar to morphine. In simple words, exercise and any physical activity help in improving your positive attitude. You will be better at using positive words in daily routine. Hence it will improve your self-talk.
5. Think about good times
If nothing else seems to work, recall good times. Talk to yourself about the beautiful memories. For me, my college time was the best time and I have best friends from my college. I still love to talk to them and meet whenever it is possible.
I went to my home country last year and met three of my friends. Also, I went to my college, spent the whole day there.
There is something inside us that creates a hollowness and I fill my inner hollowness with those memories and turn my negative feeling to positive.
6. Challenge your negative thoughts by asking questions
Now as you have started monitoring your self-talk and you can differentiate between positive and negative self-talk, start challenging your negative thoughts.
- Am I fretting too much about the imaginary situation?
- How can I find a solution and why am I not concentrating on finding a solution?
- Why I am wasting my energy instead of focusing on my strengths?
These are a few questions I always ask myself. Let me tell you, I do a lot of self-talk. And as with anybody else, it is negative most of the time. It takes deliberate efforts to bring the senses back to positive self-talk.
7. Create your future instead of predicting it
It is highly possible that you will be predicting your future while doing self-talk. If your self-talks are constructive, there is nothing wrong. Just make goals and start working on your goals to create your beautiful future.
But if you find yourself in predicting not so good future, stop and put your efforts int practice. Do the activities and tasks which are important for creating a beautiful future. Stop all the predictions.
8. Positive affirmations are the best positive self-talk exercises
Sying positive affirmations daily have a positive effect. If done correctly along with other exercises, positive affirmations can change your self-talk and finally change your mindset. Few positive affirmations which you can start are,
- I am my best friend and I take pleasure in my own solitude
- My life is at best and success comes easily to me
- I am happy as I have a beautiful family ( or replace it with anything you like)
- I am unique and my unique capabilities make me a genius
- I am able to accomplish everything I want
You may create your own positive affirmations and whenever you find yourself in negative self-talk, repeat your own positive affirmations.
I am sure these will help you in creating a beautiful positive environment in your head to start positive self-talk.
